| St. Phillips Church St. Philips is the oldest congregation in Charleston dating to the 1680šs. The present church, completed in the late 1830šs, is the third St. Philips overall, and the second on this site. Beginning in early 1864 the steeple became the principal target for the long-range Federal bombardment of Charleston, St. Michaelšs, three blocks away on the original site of St. Philips, was the initial night-time target for the Northern gunners. |
