Unitarian Church

A branch of the Independent or Congregationalist Church on Meeting St., construction on the Unitarian Church was begun in 1772. The American Revolution halted construction, however, and when the British occupied Charleston from 1780-1782 they used the incomplete structure for, among other things, a horse stable. The church was dedicated in 1787, and the congregation became Unitarian in 1817. Using the original church as a shell to build on, the present neo-Gothic church was built around it between 1852-1854.
